Is the Future Success of WordPress tied to Jetpack?

At Pressnomics last week, Matt Mullenweg suggested that the success of WordPress was linked to the Jetpack plugin. It caused a stir in the room and several folks have been talking about it this past week. I thought I would give my take here.
