WordCamp NYC – WordPress and the Enterprise Disconnect | Open Parenthesis

I’ll be speaking later today at WordCamp NYC on WordPress and the Enterprise Disconnect. It’s a revised version of the talk I gave at Prestige in Las Vegas at the beginning of the year. I’m eternally grateful to WordCamp NYC – it was the first WordCamp at which I spoke, and was the WordCamp where I first met Jake Goldman.

Why WIRED.com Migrated (And Why Your Site Should Too)

If you’re in engineering management, there’s almost certainly a ticket lurking at the bottom of your team’s Trello/Jira/Pivotal board. The details of the specific tasks vary, and if you’re lucky they don’t include “migrate 45,751 posts from flat files and old JSPs to our current CMS” like mine did, but the general idea is the same: Clean Up Technical Debt.

The Abusement of Open Source – Mario Peshev on WordPress Development

The Free Software Foundation has a clear and concise definition of free software – which is tightly connected to what we refer to “open source” with some verbal modifications: “Free software” means software that respects users’ freedom and community. Roughly, it means that the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.

More and more offices are jumping aboard the standing desk bandwagon, from Australia’s prime minister to the White House. Some studies say prolonged sitting isn’t good for your health; others say standing improves group collaboration; and still others say sitting for hours is actually OK.

Talking Publicly About Harassment Generates More Harassment

A few months ago, I posted a series of tweets about some of the most disturbing and vile sexual harassment I receive online.(Read my entire series of tweets here)Because the behaviors of online harassers are often so predictable, I feared that doing this would result in a flood of similar harassment, but I felt it was important to speak out about it precisely because men use tactics like this in an effort to silence and disempower women, and because I know that gendered online harassment of this sort is hardly unique to me.
