One of the biggest oil companies in the world says faith in fossil fuels is ‘disappearing’

Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell is to increase its spending on renewable energy to $1bn a year, its chief executive announced as he warned the public’s faith in the industry was “just disappearing”. Ben van Beurden suggested the public backlash against fossil fuel firms could threaten the industry’s future.

Mikhail Gorbachev says world appears to be preparing for World War III

Mikhail Gorbachev has urged Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump to strongly denounce nuclear war in the face of the “militarisation of politics and the new arms race”. The company has long been committed to ensuring that WhatsApp user data remains private – telling users when it was acquired by Facebook that “Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible”.

The CIA destroyed a copy of a torture report ‘by accident’

The CIA inspector general’s office has said it “mistakenly” destroyed its only copy of a comprehensive Senate torture report, despite lawyers for the Justice Department assuring a federal judge that copies of the documents were being preserved. The erasure of the document by the spy agency’s internal watchdog was deemed an “inadvertent” foul-up by the inspector general, according to Yahoo News.

France becomes first country to force all supermarkets to give unsold food to needy

Supermarkets in France have been banned from throwing away or spoiling unsold food by law. The stores are now required to donate unwanted food to charities and food banks. To stop foragers, some supermarkets have poured bleach over the discarded food or storing binned food in locked warehouses.
